Efficient Aluminium Lightning Arrestor with Base for Enhanced Protection
Conex’s Aluminium Lightning Arrestor with Base is designed for optimal lightning protection, ensuring secure grounding and dissipation of electrical surges in critical systems.
High-quality Aluminium Lightning Arrestor with Base by Conex, providing dependable protection against lightning strikes and electrical surges in a variety of applications.
At Conex Aluminium Components, we manufacture **Aluminium Lightning Arrestor with Base** for efficient lightning protection in industrial, commercial, and utility systems. Made from high-quality aluminium, these arrestors are designed to provide effective lightning dissipation and safeguard electrical systems from damage. The arrestor base ensures secure installation, while the aluminium construction offers durability and excellent corrosion resistance. Conex also offers customized options to meet specific project requirements for effective lightning protection.
It is a complete air termination unit: an aluminium air rod (finial) screwed into a cast aluminium base. Installed on roofs, chimneys, towers and parapets, it intercepts the lightning strike and passes the current into the roof and down conductors of the lightning protection system.
The standard rod is 16 mm diameter (meeting the IEC 62561-2 minimum cross-section for aluminium air rods) in lengths of 300, 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 mm. Rods above about 1 m on exposed roofs should be supported with a bracing kit or tripod base.
Flat roof (horizontal) bases, vertical wall or parapet bases, ridge saddle bases, chimney bands and heavy multi-hole bases are available. Bases are cast in LM6 or A356 aluminium and include a clamp to accept the roof conductor.
Components are designed to IEC/EN 62561-1 (connection components) and IEC/EN 62561-2 (air rods and conductors), for systems designed to IEC/BS EN 62305. For North America, UL 96 and NFPA 780 apply.
The base clamp holds aluminium tape (for example 25 × 3 mm) or 8–10 mm round conductor under a stainless steel clamp plate, giving a low-resistance bolted connection that meets IEC 62561-1 lightning current tests.
Both are acceptable in IEC 62305 conventional systems. Traditional pointed tips are widely used, while rounded or blunt tips are sometimes preferred for safety and have performed well in field studies. We supply either style.
The base is fixed with stainless steel A2/A4 screws or bolts through its mounting holes, with sealant or EPDM washers to maintain the roof's weatherproofing. Non-penetrating concrete or rubber blocks are used on membrane roofs.
The number and position of air terminals are determined by the protection level and design method in BS EN 62305-3 – rolling sphere, protective angle or mesh method – taking into account roof shape, height and projections.
Yes. Aluminium is compatible with aluminium and zinc-aluminium coated roofs. On copper or bare steel, isolating pads or bi-metallic connectors should be used to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Aluminium forms a stable protective oxide and resists atmospheric corrosion, so arrestors typically last for decades. Using stainless fixings and inspecting joints during the recommended periodic inspections maximises service life.
Aluminium weighs about one third of copper, costs significantly less, is less attractive to metal theft and is compatible with aluminium roof conductors, making the whole system easier and cheaper to install.
Arrestor assemblies are tested for lightning current withstand (for example 100 kA 10/350 µs for Class H), mechanical bending and tensile strength, and conductor clamp resistance, after environmental conditioning per IEC 62561-1.
Yes. Tall rods can be supplied with tripod bases, bracing stays and wall brackets to resist wind loads on high-rise buildings and telecom towers.
