An air terminal base is the cast aluminium fitting that holds the air rod upright and clamps the roof conductor, forming the mechanical support and electrical connection at the top of the lightning protection system.
Standard bases accept aluminium tape up to 25 × 3 mm or round aluminium conductors of 8–10 mm diameter under a stainless clamp plate. Bases for larger tapes or twin conductors are available.
Bases are tapped M16 or 5/8 in UNC to receive 16 mm air rods. Other threads, including 1/2 in UNC and M12, can be tapped for specific markets.
Bases are gravity or pressure die cast in LM6 (AlSi12) or A356, alloys with excellent castability and corrosion resistance, and are fitted with stainless steel A2 screws.
Flat roof bases (two or four fixing holes), vertical wall and parapet bases, and saddle bases for ridges are available, as well as bases for use on non-penetrating concrete blocks.
Use stainless steel screws with EPDM sealing washers or apply roofing sealant around the fixings. On membranes, non-penetrating blocks avoid drilling the roof.
Bases are connection components tested to IEC/EN 62561-1 and used in systems designed to IEC/BS EN 62305. UL 96 applies to North American systems.
The base footprint, wall thickness and fixings are designed to resist bending loads from wind acting on the rod. For long rods, stays or tripod bases should be added.
Mixing copper rods with aluminium bases is not recommended outdoors because of galvanic corrosion. Use aluminium rods with aluminium bases, or bi-metallic transition fittings.
Tests include tightening torque, pull-out and bending strength, and lightning current withstand after salt-mist and sulphurous-atmosphere conditioning per IEC 62561-1.
Natural cast finish is standard. Bases can also be anodized or powder coated to match the roof colour, with contact surfaces left uncoated.
